What HVAC Installation Involves
HVAC installation covers the replacement or first-time fitting of the equipment that heats, cools, and moves air through a building — air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, and the ductwork that distributes their output. Most homeowners arrive here at replacement rather than new construction: a system that has stopped keeping up, is failing in the middle of a season, or is costing more to run each year than it should.
A proper installation is not a swap. It starts with a load calculation that sizes equipment to the building rather than to whatever was there before, continues through permitting and inspection, and ends with commissioning — verifying refrigerant charge, airflow, and controls once the system runs. Skipping any of those is how an expensive new system underperforms an old one.
Choosing a System
The right choice depends on climate, existing infrastructure, and what you are replacing. A home with sound ductwork and a working furnace often needs only an air conditioner. A home replacing both at once is usually better served weighing a heat pump, which handles heating and cooling from a single system and increasingly performs well in cold climates. A home with no ducts at all — or an addition the ducts never reached — is typically a mini-split candidate.
Equipment is only half the decision. If the ductwork is undersized, leaking, or badly laid out, a new unit will not fix the rooms that never get comfortable. Any contractor quoting a replacement should say what they found in the duct system, not just what box they intend to install.
What Installation Costs
Costs vary by system type and by home. Central AC replacement commonly runs $3,500–$8,000, furnace replacement $2,500–$6,000, heat pumps $4,000–$10,000, and mini-splits $2,000–$5,000 per zone. Ductwork, when it needs attention, adds anywhere from a sealing job to a full replacement.
Those brackets are orientation rather than estimates. Home size, equipment efficiency, the condition of existing ducts and electrical service, permit fees, and local labour rates all move the figure, and they move it differently in different markets. The only number that means anything is the one a contractor gives after seeing the house.
